I have recently started working from home full time. There are indeed perks for working from home but there are also drawbacks, namely children. I once read that Leo Tolstoy wrote War and Peace when he was living in a small home with his wife and ten kids. I haven’t verified if any of the information is accurate nevertheless it is a good reminder that I shouldn’t use my kids as a excuse for not creating.
Here’s a video of three of my four children whom I affectionately call Tolstoy’s Kids. This was filmed after a biting and hitting session all done by the twins and the three year old. I was frustrated that I wasn’t getting any work done and sat them done to all cool off.
Later I showed my wife and we both had a good laugh. Then the realization came a that my children were the reason that I worked and that if in anyway I damaged our relationship by working it would be too great of a cost. It is not balance but harmony that we need to create. There will be times that I need to buckle down and produce a chapter or two but I also need to take time to disconnect and play with those I write for.
We all can create after all Tolstoy managed 967 pages with ten kids under foot.
